PRECEDENTS

This project draws inspiration from architectural experiments in the 1960’s counterculture movement. Settlements like Drop City, CO (near right) were built from scraps by their residents with the intention of putting America’s excesses to use for their fully communal sustainable lives. Within these small communities all resources were communally shared and residents worked together to create public art.

A REBIRTH OF ALTERNATIVE LIVING

The core idea of this project is to instill the old spirit of counterculture into contemporary architecture, to build and live as much off the land as is possible within a city. Residents live in small sleeping chambers and spend their days in the workshop producing art or in the garden + kitchen producing food. The proposal only utilizes half of the site’s available space, so the residents can live among the natural world and have full freedom to use the land as they see fit.
